Marine sediment (multi-species)

Metabarcoding products for detecting a broad range of species in marine sediment systems, such as estuarine muds and offshore sands.

Not for use in freshwater systems. We do not currently have options available for freshwater sediment, however, our Invertebrates from tissue samples (freshwater) product can be used for samples collected from kick-net surveys.

Key info and overview of all marine sediment tests available at the bottom of this page. Scroll down below the product options to read key info on each test, plus an overview of our marine sediment offering.

What do I receive?

For each product purchased, you will receive:

  • One sampling kit, to collect / store / transport your eDNA
  • One report per test ('assay')

Kit options

Marine sediment: for use with marine sediment around the world, but not for use when sampling in estuarine and mangrove sediment outside 'UK/EU+' (i.e. UK, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and the 27 EU member countries).

Estuarine / mangrove sediment (outside UK/EU+): for use when sampling in estuarine and mangrove sediment in countries outside of the UK, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and the 27 EU member countries.

A full list of all UK/EU+ countries is available at the bottom of this page.

Regional considerations

All marine sediment tests can be used in marine sediment systems across the globe.

Please purchase the correct kit for the exact habitat and country in which you are sampling. See 'kit options' above for info.

Marine sediment - key info

Invertebrates

Groups typically detected include crustaceans, tunicates, cnidarians (including jellyfish), annelids, molluscs, echinoderms, and sponges.

May also detect some vertebrate species.

Bacteria

Assess the community composition of the microbiome of your sample. Detects 99% of the bacteria in your sample. Generally identifies to the taxonomic level of 'family' or higher.

Eukaryotes

Detects algae, macroalgae species (chlorophyta, phaeophyceae, rhodophyta), phytoplankton, zooplankton, protists, ciliates, dinoflagellates, diatoms, annelids, molluscs, crustaceans, tunicates, invertebrates and some cnidarians (including jellyfish) and sponges.

Due to the broad nature of this test, detections will generally be assigned to family or genus level. Test excludes bacteria and archaea. Can sometimes detect vertebrates and fungi.

When running this test on a tissue sample, please note: in order for it to be processed, the tissue must be larger than 0.3mm (300um).
